Obtaining good oral health doesn’t have to be difficult. While there are many fads and gimmicks out there, following a simple daily routine is really all you need to do. Chances are, you know the drill–so, let’s brush up on the basics of good oral care.
If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times, “brush and floss twice per day.” This is one recommendation that all dental professionals share, and for good reason. Brushing and flossing are the foundation for good oral hygiene. Nothing removes daily plaque and bacteria more than doing so.
As a rule, opt for a soft-bristled toothbrush when brushing your teeth. Using toothpaste with fluoride, brush both the outside and inside sides of the teeth. As part of a daily routine, regular brushing and flossing is half the battle. The bacteria and plaque that are not removed by you are to be removed by the dentist. This is why semi-annual visits to the dentist are vital. For plaque that has hardened into tartar, only a professional dental cleaning can remove it. Otherwise, it sits on the teeth and begins to decay.
As you brush your teeth, do not forget your tongue! A tongue scraper is an easy way to remove plaque and bacteria that has built up on the tongue. If, for some reason, you are not able to brush your teeth or your tongue, you may swish with a fluoride-based mouth rinse. This will wash away sugars, food particles, and bacteria until you are able to brush at a later time.
A simple daily routine, followed by regular visits to the dentist, is the best path for reaching good oral health.
