Do You Have Gum Disease?

Though it’s generally painless and a major cause of tooth loss in American adults, gum disease doesn’t happen overnight. Rather, it occurs in stages, with each subsequent stage more aggressive than the one before. To help individuals achieve and maintain good oral health, the American Dental Association recommends routine dental checkups twice each year. Meanwhile, it’s important to know the risk factors that increase the chances of developing gum disease.

Consider the following, as noted by Mouth Healthy:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Smoking
  • Chewing Tobacco
  • Genetics
  • Crooked teeth or misalignments that make it difficult to keep teeth clean
  • Pregnancy
  • Diabetes
  • Medications (steroids, anti-epilepsy drugs, cancer therapy drugs, some calcium channel blockers and oral contraceptives)

It’s true—individuals with any of the above-mentioned factors should pay close attention to their oral health, as these conditions and lifestyle choices place them at a greater risk of developing gum disease. Even so, there are warning signs and symptoms to note. Some of these include gums that are red, swollen or bleed easily. In some instances, gums may appear to have pulled away or receded from teeth. Another sign is persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth, as well as permanent teeth that have become loose. Some report a peculiar feeling when they bite down, as if their teeth fit together differently. Moreover, those with dentures could notice a change in the way their dentures fit.

While bleeding gums are more indicative of early gum disease called Gingivitis, loose teeth and ill-fitting dentures likely point to advanced periodontal gum disease. In either case, it is imperative to visit a dentist right away. Gingivitis can be reversed, and dentists are well equipped to help patients regain their oral health. Similarly, a dentist is the greatest ally against the long-term effects of advanced gum disease with treatments personalized to the unique needs of a patient.
