Dental Health Resolutions In The New Year

Perhaps you’d like to start a business in 2018, meet financial goals or spend more time with family. Whatever your aspirations are, the new year is an important time to consider making changes to improve your overall health. One key way to advance your health is to commit to regular dental checkups, establish better oral care at home and complete dental treatments from previous appointments. Even so, when it comes to making dental health resolutions, one thing is certain—consistency is key.

For those hoping to achieve better oral and dental health, Colgate reports that daily brushing and flossing is a sure and simple way to do so. However, it’s important to make sure that you are brushing and flossing properly. For instance, consider the type of toothbrush that you are using. Whether you prefer a manual type or electric type, make sure that you are using a soft-bristled brush to protect sensitive gum tissues. In turn, look at the type of toothpaste you’re using. As a rule, use fluoridated toothpaste with the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of approval. Finally, when brushing your teeth, place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards the gum line and gently brush down, away from gums. Without question, brushing and flossing twice each day is the best way to remove plaque and prevent tooth decay, periodontal gum disease and bad breath. Lastly, remember to replace your toothbrush every three months.

Aside from committing to regular brushing and flossing, making healthier food and beverage choices is equally important, especially in regards to snacking. For example, when teeth are frequently exposed to high carbohydrate foods and sugars (including sports drinks, juices and sodas), this places them “under attack” by harmful acids and bacteria. These substances deplete tooth enamel and interrupt the natural ability of teeth to gain minerals throughout the day.

Suppose you’ve already committed to good oral care and regular dental visits, but you’d like to amp up your smile in the new year. The good news is that advancements in dentistry continue to provide a number of options, including teeth whitening, multiple versions of braces and restorative dentistry to help you obtain the bright and healthy smile that you want and deserve.
