East Cobb Pediatric Dentistry

Grateful Dental Care provides complete pediatric dentistry for the residents of East Cobb and the surrounding areas. Following are some frequently asked questions regarding children's dental care:

Q: When should I take my child to the dentist for the first check-up?

A: The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that you take your
child to see a dentist when the first tooth appears or no later than
his/her first birthday.

Q: What should I expect on my child's first visit to the dentist?

A: The dentist and staff will try to establish a rapport and trust with your child.
We will examine your child's mouth and teeth and will look for any signs of
dental problems.  Our pediatric dentist will also talk with you and your child about brushing,
flossing, fluoride, etc. and help you establish a routine for good dental hygiene at
home.

Q: Are baby teeth really that important to my child?

A: Baby teeth are important because they help children speak clearly and chew
naturally and they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow
when they are ready to erupt into the mouth.

Q: Are thumb sucking and pacifier habits harmful to a child's teeth?

A: If they go on for a long period of time, these habits can become a problem,
however, most children stop these habits on their own. If your child is still
sucking his/her thumb or using a pacifier past the age of three, a mouth appliance
may be recommended by a dentist.

Q: How often does my child need to see the dentist?

A: A dental checkup every six months is recommended in order to prevent cavities and
other dental problems. Your dentist can tell you exactly how often your child
needs to visit the dentist based on his/her personal oral health.

Q: When should we begin using toothpaste?

A: As soon as the teeth begin to appear, start brushing twice a-day using fluoridated
toothpaste and a soft, age-appropriate sized toothbrush. Children do not have
the ability to brush their teeth effectively and will need assistance. They should
spit out and not swallow excess toothpaste after brushing.

Q: How do sealants work?

A: Sealants fill the crevasses on the chewing surfaces of teeth. This keeps foods
particles from getting caught in the teeth and causing cavities.

Q: How can I help prevent tooth decay in my child?

A: Take your child to the dentist regularly beginning with the eruption of the first
tooth or no later than his/her first birthday. Your dentist may or may not
recommend fluoride treatments. Practicing good dental hygiene at home
combined with regular visits to a dentist is the best way to help prevent tooth
decay in your child.
