Dentures: At The Forefront Of Restorative Dentistry

As a tried and true restorative measure to replace missing teeth, dentures support the structure of an individual’s face, while helping them speak and eat with confidence. Though dentures seem to have a bad rap in terms of fit and aesthetics, today’s dentures are custom made, natural looking, and comfortable. Thus, Dentures remain at the forefront of restorative dentistry.

Along with advancements in cosmetic dentistry and other personalized dental treatments, dentists may now customize dentures based on age, tooth shade, and natural facial contours, including soft tissues of the lips and cheeks. While many assume that the focus of dentures is purely functional, there is a consideration of design, giving dentists and patients alike the ability to create a denture solution that works with the lifestyle and the look of the patient. Two main types of dentures, full and partial, are explained below.

Full (Complete) Dentures

Consisting of two parts, upper and lower, full (complete) dentures replace all teeth along the dental arch. A flesh-colored base (acrylic) fits over the patient’s gums. While the upper portion of the denture covers the palate, the bottom portion is shaped like a horseshoe to allow room for the tongue.

Full dentures may be conventional or immediate. The main difference between the two is that conventional full dentures are inserted after healing has taken place. Because complete healing of the gum tissues following removal of any remaining teeth may take a few months, the patient goes without teeth during this time. On the contrary, immediate dentures are placed right away following tooth extraction, but they must be adjusted, or relined, after tissues have healed.

Partial Dentures

As a suitable alternative to a dental bridge, a partial denture attaches (via a metal framework) to a few natural teeth, sometimes by a crown on each side. Flexible partials are newer, leading-edge thermoplastic appliances that are thin, easily adjustable, and an exciting option for those with sensitivities to metal. In turn, Simply Natural Partials represent another handcrafted denture design that is versatile and lightweight.

Which Option Is For Me?
